Looking Forward to Another Great Year!
December 2006
- Deanna Lahre, an INTRAA Board Member, testified at a hearing of the Columbus Human Rights Commission which resulted in the Commission being able to accept complaints of sexual orientation and gender identity discrimination and to seek voluntary resolution.
- Due to involvement by INTRAA, the Trans Youth and Family Advocates local chapter provided a seminar to teachers at a local elementary school regarding transgender students.
- Efforts are underway to create an Indy Boyz calendar which will be an INTRAA fundraiser. This is going to be a hot seller!
- INTRAA members and allies met at the monthly meeting to discuss upcoming events, including our February 3 fundraiser Remember Who Made You.
- INTRAA representatives participated in a conference call with the Sylvia Rivera Law Project and the TGI Justice Project regarding a transwoman in an Indiana prison experiencing abusive treatment.
- Cianan Russell, INTRAA’s Chair, was contacted by a representative from the Williams Institute, a non-profit think tank working on LGBT issues, for information about how to run a Story Collection Project to complement advocacy. The Institute is currently putting together a guide for organizations to set up their own story gathering projects.
- INTRAA’s Board of Directors held a special meeting to discuss how the organization will continue to work with coalition members via Indiana Equality to fight for civil rights protections.
- INTRAA’s Policy Committee met to discuss political strategy in the upcoming legislative session. Lobbying efforts will likely include meetings with legislators to discuss transgender civil rights issues.
- INTRAA’s Reel Gender Film Series showed the classic film Some Like It Hot.
- INTRAA trainers provided a workshop on Gender Identity in the Workplace to members of GLEAM, the GLBT Employee Affinity Group at Eli Lilly and Company which added gender identity to their corporate policies earlier this year. Other trainings will likely follow.
- INTRAA members met with representative from the law firm Baker and Daniels and other GLBT groups to discuss a newly proposed GLBT Pro Bono Project that would provide legal services to the GLBT community free of charge.
