National GLBT Rights Organizations Condemn Arrest of Nationally Recognized State Leader

Groups call upon State Attorney’s Office to immediately drop charges

WASHINGTON DC, March 1 — The two largest national lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender (LGBT) rights organizations — the National Gay and Lesbian Task Force and the Human Rights Campaign — today condemned the Feb. 27 arrest and detention of Nadine Smith, executive director of Equality Florida. Smith was arrested during a heated hearing before the Largo City Commission in Florida, during which the commission voted 5–2 to begin the process of firing its 14-year city manager, Steve Stanton, because he announced his plans to transition from male to female.

NCTE Advisory: Real ID Act Regulations Released

(Washington, DC) — Today the U.S. Department of Homeland Security (DHS) issued long overdue final draft regulations for implementation of the Real ID Act. These regulations represent the requirements states are being told to follow for standardization of driver’s licenses, verification of citizenship status, and information matching between state and federal databases.

Only new IDs that meet the Real ID Act standard will be acceptable for federal purposes such as air travel or entering courthouses. Due to great displeasure from state officials over serious concerns with the Real ID Act, DHS Sec. Chertoff also announced that the implementation deadline for state compliance will be extended— until December 31, 2009—from the original May 2008 date.

Gender Change Costs Dean A Job

This article brings up some interesting questions of whether GID is covered as a disability and how religions get involved.

Gender Change Costs Dean a Job

Religious institutions have long had leeway to hire and fire based on creed. But what happens when a man who professes the faith also starts to appear on campus as a woman?

At Spring Arbor University, a Michigan institution affiliated with the Free Methodist Church, the pending termination of a transgender faculty member (and ordained Baptist minister) has raised just that question...

IU Alumni Transgender Survey

In its efforts to get gender identity added to the list of protected characteristics in Indiana University's Equal Opportunity policies, the Indiana University Gay, Lesbian, Bisexual, and Transgender Alumni Association (IU GLBTAA) is hosting a survey to get feedback from students, faculty, staff, and alumni about the climate on IU's campuses for transgender and transsexual people.

If you have experiences to share about yourself or someone you know who is transgender or transsexual and is or was associated with IU, please take a few minutes and complete this survey. Information from the survey will be used to convey why gender identity protections are needed to allow people equal access to employment and education.

FUAH Release: The Michigan Women’s Music Festival Continues to Promote Discrimination

Families United Against Hate was elated to hear that the “Michigan Womyn’s Music Festival” had ended their 31 year long policy of discrimination toward transgender women. This was not to last, however, as we learned that the “Michigan Womyn’s Music Festival” spokesperson, Lisa Vogel issued a long and protracted statement which essentially said nothing has changed: the Festival is intended for women-born women, and those who seek to purchase tickets are asked to respect that intention. Vogel emphasized, “If a transwoman purchased a ticket, it represents nothing more than that womon choosing to disrespect the stated intention of this Festival.”
