National GLBT Rights Organizations Condemn Arrest of Nationally Recognized State Leader

Groups call upon State Attorney’s Office to immediately drop charges

WASHINGTON DC, March 1 — The two largest national lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender (LGBT) rights organizations — the National Gay and Lesbian Task Force and the Human Rights Campaign — today condemned the Feb. 27 arrest and detention of Nadine Smith, executive director of Equality Florida. Smith was arrested during a heated hearing before the Largo City Commission in Florida, during which the commission voted 5–2 to begin the process of firing its 14-year city manager, Steve Stanton, because he announced his plans to transition from male to female.

Throughout the U.S., most multigender “gay” organizations describe themselves as serving the “LGBT” (lesbian, gay male, bisexual and transgender) community. Despite that descriptor, many transgender individuals don’t feel welcome or included at “LGBT” events, and some lesbians and gay men aren’t sure they should be there, either. In many cases, organizations believe they are inclusive of trans people and issues, but trans people who have attended have spread the word that that isn’t really the case in practice.

Before Stonewall: The Compton's Cafeteria Riot

A memorial plaque commemorating the 40th anniversary of the first known instance of transgender resistance to police harassment in the United States was installed at a ceremony Thursday in San Francisco.

The Compton's Cafeteria riot predated the famous uprising at New York's Stonewall Inn by three years.
