New Jersey Passes Gender Identity/Expression Hate Crime and School Anti-Bullying Law

On January 7, 2008, the New Jersey General Assembly passed A4591/S2975 by a large majority of 65-10. This follows action last week in the state Senate where the bill passed unanimously 35-0. The law that passed will now go to Governor Corzine's desk for his expected signature.

ACTION ALERT UPDATE: Houses passes non-trans-inclusive ENDA

The House has postponed the vote on ENDA that was scheduled to take place this week. This means that while we were initially working on a very tight deadline to make contacts and that we had a specific date in mind, now we have more time to make much needed contacts with our key Indiana targets. Of course, you should continue to contact your Representative (yes, even if you have already!), but making contact with
Joe Donnelly (202) 225-3915
Brad Ellsworth (202) 225-4636
and Baron Hill (202) 225-5315
is especially important. If you are at all inclined to pick up the phone, place a call to one of these Representatives first.

Take Action with INTRAA: Call your Senators about hate crimes!

A letter writing campaign is currently circulating throughout the state encouraging those who support the Matthew Shepard Hate Crimes Act to write Senators Bayh and Lugar telling them so. This act that has passed in the House is expected to be voted on in the Senate NEXT WEEK. Get out your pens and sheets of paper and start writing why you think it is important that sexual orientation, gender, gender identity and disability should be added to existing hate crimes legislation. This is of vital importance to the LGBT community at large, but specifically impacts the transgender community in monumental ways. Continue reading for instructions on how to send your letter!

National GLBT Rights Organizations Condemn Arrest of Nationally Recognized State Leader

Groups call upon State Attorney’s Office to immediately drop charges

WASHINGTON DC, March 1 — The two largest national lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender (LGBT) rights organizations — the National Gay and Lesbian Task Force and the Human Rights Campaign — today condemned the Feb. 27 arrest and detention of Nadine Smith, executive director of Equality Florida. Smith was arrested during a heated hearing before the Largo City Commission in Florida, during which the commission voted 5–2 to begin the process of firing its 14-year city manager, Steve Stanton, because he announced his plans to transition from male to female.

NCTE Advisory: Real ID Act Regulations Released

(Washington, DC) — Today the U.S. Department of Homeland Security (DHS) issued long overdue final draft regulations for implementation of the Real ID Act. These regulations represent the requirements states are being told to follow for standardization of driver’s licenses, verification of citizenship status, and information matching between state and federal databases.

Only new IDs that meet the Real ID Act standard will be acceptable for federal purposes such as air travel or entering courthouses. Due to great displeasure from state officials over serious concerns with the Real ID Act, DHS Sec. Chertoff also announced that the implementation deadline for state compliance will be extended— until December 31, 2009—from the original May 2008 date.
