Why This is All Worth It…

Tuesday, 07. 4. 2006  –  Section: INTRAAupdates, Vault

I just got back from a very long day in Bloomington, spent with friends, several of whom are fellow activists in INTRAA, networking at the Bloomington Pride Picnic. It was hard work. It rained. It was hot, muggy, etc.

But ultimately it was all worth it, spending time talking with community members about gender identity issues, drinking lemonade from Willy Joe’s, and kicking back listening to local musical talent. I had a great time.

I feel very fortunate that we have so many active volunteers in INTRAA!

We had eight people travel to Bloomington from Indianapolis, Carmel, and Lafayette to hang out and network with folks in Region 9! Yay team!

On the way home after a long, tiring day, we passed by town after town and could see distant Fireworks shows’ one finale after another. I think we were all feeling a little disconnected from “mainstream” celebrations of Independence Day. One of my fellow activists remarked, “What were we thinking? We could have been sitting around watching fireworks and not dealing with all this…”

And while he was technically right, I realized that I was right where I wanted to be: making a difference one person at a time with other like-minded stewards of our rights and freedoms.

If you want to join us on our next networking trip, please volunteer to staff INTRAA’s booth at Fort Wayne’s Pride Celebration on July 29th.

Our Inspiration

Each time a person stands up for an ideal, or acts to improve the lot of others, or strikes out against injustice, he sends forth a tiny ripple of hope. That ripple builds others. Those ripples—crossing each other from a million different centers of energy—build a current that can sweep down the mightiest walls of oppression and injustice.
–Senator Robert F. Kennedy, 1966
