Review: Transgender Studies Reader

Sunday, 07. 2. 2006  –  Section: TransNews, Vault

I recently bought the new Transgender Studies Reader by Susan Stryker and Stephen Whittle. This looks like an awesome collection that goes a long way to collect and make more accessible in one collection the scholarship that has been emerging on gender identity and transgender experiences. One major plus is the fact that transgender studies have emerged from feminist theory, queer theory and sexuality studies is made clear in this collection. The pieces that the editors have chosen to include demonstrate the bredth and depth of scholarship in this growing academic area. Check this collection out and let me know what you think. As I start reading the pieces I will probably post more discussion about them. Check back in with my blog regularly and let me know what you think of the reader or other trans related academic work. Trans theories are one of my primary academic interests.

Our Inspiration

Each time a person stands up for an ideal, or acts to improve the lot of others, or strikes out against injustice, he sends forth a tiny ripple of hope. That ripple builds others. Those ripples—crossing each other from a million different centers of energy—build a current that can sweep down the mightiest walls of oppression and injustice.
–Senator Robert F. Kennedy, 1966
